Gallowglass formed
in 1997 when Johnny Cuomo met brothers’
Mike and Kevin Meehan at a local music
session. Since that time, the ranks of Gallowglass have
shifted and been joined, periodically, by guest musicians
on a variety of instruments, including bass, drums,
button-accordion, and flute. |
 |
In one form or another, Gallowglass has performed
in a wide variety of forums that range from large theaters,
to traditional folk festivals, to backyard gatherings. Primarily
based around traditional Irish music, the band’s repertoire
will commonly combine outside elements such as Bluegrass,
American Folk, and Original Compositions to their set-list.
Here is a list of the most current Gallowglass line-up and
brief synopsis of their contributions to the band:
Johnny Cuomo
Original member Johnny Cuomo provides the voice, rhythm, and
the occasional melody instrument to the band. Whether it be
singing an original song, strumming out a steady rhythm on
guitar, or playing mandolin or tenor banjo, Johnny always
keeps the show interesting.
Johnny plays guitar, mandolin, tenor banjo, tin whistle, dobro,
and harmonica. He is also the lead vocalist for the band.
Mike Meehan
Original member Mike Meehan lends his hand to the scratchy,
yet delicate sound of the fiddle. Although classically trained,
Mike cuts, slides, and scratches his way through jigs, reels,
and an assortment of folk and bluegrass tunes. Accompanying
fiddle melodies behind song arrangements provide just the
right blend between vocals and melody instruments.
Mike plays fiddle, tin whistle, highland bagpipes, and guitar.

Dan LoweryAlthough
Texan native Dan Lowery is a relative newcomer to the
Gallowglass line-up, he is a heartily seasoned musician
in his own rite, to be sure. Dan primarily plays Irish
flute for the band, but his contributions don’t
stop there. Whether backing tunes, singing harmonies,
or lashing out flat-picking melodies on the guitar,
Dan has become an integral part of Gallowglass today.

Dan plays Irish flute, tin whistle, and acoustic
guitar. He also sings harmony vocals.
